Panorpa Rufescens - Scorpionfly

Family - Panorpidae

Order - Mecoptera

Length - 10 to 12 mm.

Recognition - Reddish brown body with yellow wings with black markings. The male abdomen is curled up much like that of a scorpion.

Habitat - Forest

Behavior - Predator

Residency - Southeastern United States

Of Special Note - Despite the dangerous appearance of the scorpion style abdomen, the scorpionfly is harmless and cannot sting.
