Attenuator Schematic

An attenuator is used to decrease the amplitude of a signal. This is commonly used in car stereos for example to provide a quick way for the listener to turn down the volume. There are also applications in guitar amplifiers such as tube amps, so you don't have to turn off the power and wait for the tubes to warm up when you turn it back on. In most cases, however, it is easier to just use the hard power switch.
